Reds activate Stephenson with Brice on DL

The Reds hoped to give Robert Stephenson a few more days on the disabled list to work on his mechanics through bullpen sessions before he was activated and returned to the rotation, but an injury to Austin Brice left Cincinnati shorthanded for long relievers and changed plans.

Mesoraco placed on paternity list

The Reds placed catcher Devin Mesoraco on the paternity list Monday, which means he will be out for three days to be present for the birth of his first child. Reliever Austin Brice was recalled to replace Mesoraco on the 25-man roster.

When acquired by the Reds in January 2017 was rated by MLB.com the ninth-best prospect in the Marlins' organization...in 2016 was a mid-season Southern League All-Star and SL Pitcher of the Week for 4/11-4/17...was South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for 6/18-6/24, 2013 and an MiLB.com Marlins Organizational All-Star in 2011...attended Northwood High School in Pittsboro, NC...in his senior season for NHS in 2010, in 25 apps as his team's starting shortstop hit .442 (34-77, 5hr, 32rbi).

2016

In his Major League debut held opponents to a .173 batting average in 15 relief apps during 2 stints with the Marlins (8/9-8/14, 8/29-remainder of the season)...made 14 of his 15 apps beginning 8/30...spent most of the season in the minor leagues, where he posted a 2.74 ERA with 4 saves in 13 starts and 19 relief apps for Class AA Jacksonville and Class AAA New Orleans...was a mid-season Southern League All-Star and SL Pitcher of the Week for 4/11-4/17...began the season in Jacksonville's starting rotation and made all 13 of his starts through 6/12 (3-6, 3.00)...beginning 6/17 made his last 14 apps there out of the bullpen (1-2-2, 2.53)...on 8/3 was promoted to New Orleans and, surrounding a brief stint with the Marlins from 8/9-8/14 during which he made his first career appearance, made all 5 apps for the Zephyrs in relief...after his first promotion to Mia on 8/9, made his Major League debut on 8/12 vs WSox by throwing a perfect eighth inning in the 4-2 loss...struck out Adam Eaton, who already had 4 hits, induced Tyler Saladino to ground out and struck out Melky Cabrera...returned to New Orleans 2 days after his debut without making another appearance, but was promoted again on 8/29 and spent the rest of the season in the Marlins' bullpen...began his Major League career with 3 scoreless apps (4ip)...entered the season rated by MLB.com the 16th-best prospect in the Marlins' system.
