"I'm not sad at all," Chapman said Saturday with Pena translating. "I did my job and that was saving the game. I'm very happy and very blessed I was able to break that record and continue to break it. Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to keep going. At the same time, I knew sooner or later that it would stop. Yesterday was that day."
The previous strikeout streak record for a reliever was set 37 seasons ago when Bruce Sutter had 39 straight games in 1977.
"There's nothing I can do but go out and see what happens," Chapman said. "You never know."
