The play in question came to start the inning, when Cincinnati's Todd Frazier chopped a pitch to the right side of the infield, pulling Santana away from first. Santana bobbled the hopper, but quickly plucked the baseball from the dirt and shoveled it to the bag, where Kluber was covering.
Kluber caught the relay and stepped on the base just before Frazier arrived, but first-base umpire Greg Gibson initially ruled the Reds' runner safe, prompting Francona to emerge from the home dugout. A one-minute, 44-second review at the Replay Operations Center in New York led to an overturned call, improving Francona's record to 13-for-25 on challenges.
