Reds gain an arm, lose a bat in Rule 5 Draft

The Reds selected right-hander Mikey O'Brien from the Yankees with the 14th pick of the Triple-A Phase of Thursday's Rule 5 Draft.

O'Brien, 23, was drafted originally by New York in the ninth round of the 2008 MLB Draft out of Hidden Valley High School in Roanoke, Va. He spent 2013 split between the Yankees' Class-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton clubs, combining for an 8-10 record and 4.17 ERA in 27 games (25 starts).

Outfielder Theodis Bowe, who played with Double-A Pensacola in the Reds system in 2013, was taken by the Nationals. He batted .206 with four home runs, 16 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 99 games.
