Starting catcher had begun season with just one hit in 23 at-bats

Mesoraco starts, allowing Hanigan to regroup

ST. LOUIS -- Reds catcher Ryan Hanigan took a foul ball off his right thumb during Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Cardinals, but it had little to do with his not playing Wednesday. Manager Dusty Baker had already planned to have Devin Mesoraco catch for Homer Bailey.

Following the Thursday off-day, Mesoraco will also catch Mike Leake on Friday at Pittsburgh. Hanigan is off to a 1-for-23 (.043) start to his season. Meanwhile, Mesoraco had started just one out of the first eight games.

"That will help [Mesoraco], and it will help Hani to just hit, hit, hit," Baker said. "He's putting a little pressure on himself. When you start off the season 1-for-20-something, it's natural. I talked to him about it. The key thing is to quit counting."
