Pirates at the plate: While getting 11 men to the plate in a seven-run fourth, Jason Bay hit an RBI double and Steve Pearce rolled a two-run single through the left side. Neil Walker added a two-run double to left field. Freddy Sanchez hit a two-run single in the sixth inning. Adam LaRoche and Ronny Paulino followed with RBI singles.

Reds at the plate: Brandon Phillips had a five-RBI day, including a three-run homer to left field in the first inning that gave his team a 3-0 lead. It was Phillips' first homer this spring. The All-Star second baseman added an RBI single in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Pirates on the mound: Starter John Van Benschoten gave up four earned runs and five hits in his three innings. Luis Munoz allowed two unearned runs, walked three and hit a batter in one inning. Jonah Bayliss gave up one earned run and two hits in one inning.

Reds on the mound: In his second game, but first start, Johnny Cueto allowed one hit and struck out four without a walk in three scoreless innings. Richie Gardner last only one-third of an inning in relief and was charged with seven earned runs, five hits and two walks. Jon Adkins pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two hits and a strikeout.
