Reds fall to Phillies in exhibition opener

Phillies at the plate: Ryan Howard smacked a wind-aided double to center, went to third on a Pat Burrell single and scored when Geoff Jenkins grounded into a double play. New third baseman Pedro Feliz stroked a line single in his first Phillies at-bat, then doubled in the second run in the fifth. Also in the fifth, Greg Dobbs belted a three-run homer.

Reds at the plate: Jay Bruce, ranked as the sport's top prospect by Baseball America, singled in the second for the only Reds hit off Jamie Moyer. Adam Rosales ripped a solo homer in the seventh.

Phillies on the mound: Moyer, in his 22nd Major League season, allowed one hit over three scoreless innings. He walked none and struck out three. Rule 5 Draft pick Travis Blackley also worked three scoreless innings. He allowed one hit, but picked the runner off and also struck out two.

Reds on the mound: Rotation candidate Jeremy Affeldt worked two innings and surrendered one run on three hits. Gary Majewski allowed six runs on six hits in one-third of an inning, giving him a spring ERA of 162.00.

Grapefruit League records: Phillies (1-0), Reds (0-1).

Up next: The Reds will host the Twins at Ed Smith Stadium on Thursday at 1:05 p.m. ET. Matt Belisle will start for the Reds with Francisco Cordero, Josh Fogg, Mike Lincoln, Kent Mercker, Mike Stanton and David Weathers are also expected to pitch. Scott Baker is scheduled to start for Minnesota.
