Just when it looked like the Reds were on their way to their first winning road trip of the season, the Rockies came from six runs back to win, 10-9, in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon.
Cincinnati is now 3-3 on its current road trip and concludes the trip this week with a three-game series against St. Louis starting on Tuesday.
Only two victories separate them in the win column; however, the Cards are alone in second, while the Reds are alone in the cellar.
The Reds have only won one series since the start of May and had not won consecutive games until last week.
Aaron Harang pitches the opener for Cincinnati. He has been the lone bright spot for the team on the road this season. The team is 12-18 on the road, but Harang has a 3-1 road record with a 4.22 ERA and the team has won five of his six road starts.
CIN: RHP Aaron Harang (6-2, 4.22 ERA)
Harang is coming off his first complete game of the season, a masterful six-hitter against the Astros in which he struck out seven. He will be trying to repeat his performance of April 24 at Busch Stadium. That day, Harang improved to 3-0 when he went 7 2/3 innings and allowed just two runs on five hits and struck out five en route to a 10-3 win. Harang is 4-6 in his career vs. the Cardinals but is 3-1 in his last five starts against them over last two seasons.
STL: RHP Todd Wellemeyer (1-1, 7.57 ERA)
The Cardinals love Wellemeyer's arm, and they liked the way he handled himself in his first start for them on Wednesday at Coors Field. He can be prone to both walks and home runs, and he needs to keep those tendencies in check. But he can throw legitimate gas, and his slider can be an out pitch.
Player to watch
Cincinnati first baseman Scott Hatteberg went 0-for-8 over the weekend in Colorado, but look for him to get out of his slump when he faces Wellemeyer, against whom he is 3-for-4 with one double.
