Harang falters as Reds fall to Braves

|
BRAVES (ss) 6, REDS 5
at Sarasota, Fla.
Sunday, March 18

Braves at the plate: Jeff Francoeur's two-run homer in the first staked Atlanta to a 2-0 lead. The Braves added single runs in the third (Kelly Johnson's solo homer) and fourth, but let a big opportunity to break open the game slip away when, after scoring once, they squandered a bases-loaded, no-out rally in the fourth.

Reds at the plate: Scott Hatteberg doubled in the fifth to knock in the first run Cincinnati, which struggled at the plate early. His double scored Alex Gonzalez, who'd singled with two outs.

Braves on the mound: Right-hander Buddy Carlyle limited the Reds to four hits over four innings. Carlyle, who picked up the win, gave up no runs, struck out four and walked one and left with the Braves ahead, 4-0. Brian Boyer followed Carlyle, worked two innings and allowed one run on three hits.

Reds on the mound: Right-hander Aaron Harang didn't look sharp. While Harang, who took the loss, struck out nine, he allowed eight hits and gave up four runs. He also served up a pair of homers in what was an up-and-down performance, as Harang wrestled with command from the start. Left-hander Brian Shackleford, who followed Harang for the Reds, gave up a run in the fifth.

Grapefruit League records: Braves 9-7; Reds 13-4.

Up next: The Braves take on the Indians on Monday at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. Game time is 1:05 p.m. ET. Left-hander Chuck James will start, and James will face Tribe right-hander Adam Miller.

As for the Reds, they travel to Lakeland, Fla., to play the Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium. Right-hander Bronson Arroyo will get the start, and he'll face Tigers left-hander Kenny Rogers. Game time is 1:05 p.m.
