Reds pitchers hit hard in loss to Bucs

PIRATES 13, REDS 1
at Bradenton, Fla.
Thursday, March 15

Reds at the plate: The Reds got six hits in one of their most unproductive offensive games of Spring Training. They scored one run, which came on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. Tyrell Godwin got the RBI.

Pirates at the plate: The Pirates sprinkled base hits all over McKechnie Field. Chris Duffy had a pair of hits that jump-started two rallies, and Humberto Cota provided the power when he hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning. It staked the Bucs to a 5-0 lead. Don Kelly's double knocked in a two runs in the fifth.

Reds on the mound: Right-hander Kirk Saarloos didn't look sharp. He gave up five runs on seven hits. His immediate replacement didn't look much better. Left-hander Mike Stanton got hit hard in giving up his first runs of the spring. In one inning, Stanton allowed four runs on five hits.

Pirates on the mound: Left-hander Paul Maholm, who has pitched mostly in "B" games this spring, looked in great form for his second start of the season. In 4 2/3 innings, he handcuffed the Reds on two hits in recording his longest outing of the Grapefruit League season.

Grapefruit League records: Reds 11-3; Pirates 6-8-1.

Up next: The Reds take on the Blue Jays on Friday in Sarasota. Left-hander Eric Milton gets the start, and he will face Toronto left-hander Gustavo Chacin. As for the Pirates, they travel to St. Petersburg to take on the Devil Rays. Left-hander Tom Gorzelanny will start for the Bucs, and he'll face right-hander James Shields in a game that starts at 1:05 p.m.
